S'pore Experience 1

The highlight of my holidays this break, the much-anticipated trip south to the home of the Merlion, Singapore. Singapore, and the first thing that came into my mind was that, it had been more than ten years ago since i last stepped foot on that foreign ground. The memories of the previous visit were soon fading, but as i revisited some of the places, i realized that the images were still intact.

The second thing was, painfully, the financial part. Singapore's currency rate is higher than Malaysia's, so everything we had planned to do came with the price of more than double the actual. Surfing through the Net, searching for an accommodation, my heart sank looking at the high prices. Thankfully, N and Y were coincidentally going there too and they invited S and i to join them at their relative place. And of course, there's AirAsia with low rates, everyone can fly and this trip kicked off! Introducing the fantastic four: N, Y, S and me.

- Marina Bay Sands
This place is luxurious! Surrounded by futuristic building design, this place is worth a visit. Recommendation: Go during the night will be much more amazing with the city lights in play.

- Esplanade
Another place for shopping. Window shopping. We spent a short time visiting the area. We were more interested with the scenic view of the city and from here, we could see the Merlion statue. The Merlion was having a sore throat, so no water fountain out.

- Singapore Flyer
One of the biggest, we could see the entire city of Singapore and beyond! Comment: It was pricey and if you're on a tight budget, you might want to give this a pass.

They built and decorated the platform of the Flyer nicely.

A thirty minute ride, one rotation, in an air-conditioned surrounding plus with the view of the city surely gave us time to rest our wearing feet and to enjoy the ride before continuing our sight-seeing tour around city on foot.

- Bugis Street and Bugis Junction
Having visited two of the higher-end shopping location, this place gave us the chance to actually purchase something. At reasonable prices, this place offers good souvenirs and food along the way. Recommended visit.

In Bugis Junction. I liked the concept of this shopping area. Gave that sense of, what do you call, overseas.

- Boat Quay/Clarke Quay and River City
These places come to life at night. There were cafes by the river and lit to excite. Also here was the ride similar to the G-Force, but since we weren't fully prepared for this extreme ride, we vowed to come back next time to ride on this. Recommended a visit.

- Orchard Road
As always, this place was amazing at night. Liked the lights, shopping again. Recommended.

Having used the MRT most of our time during our stay in Singapore, it is just saddening to see how our Malaysia's LRT system sat in comparison. We failed, miserably. The MRT system is super good, and we need not worry if it's too crowded because even if it's still was, we managed to get into it. There were many coaches per trip. And the mentality of the people, going out first before new ones enter, was something the Malaysians need to follow.

A map of their integrated MRT system. 4 lines at various interchanges. And to get to their airport via this, we don't need to take as long as 45 minutes- which was something my friend and i should be very much grateful of. If not, we won't be back in KL soon, but that's another story.

The only thing that we have, that's better in my humble opinion, was the atmosphere inside the train. To be honest, the atmosphere inside was rather tense. People don't talk much in the train and usually, they'll just read a book (a healthy habit, no doubt) or blast their iPod into their ears or be engaged to their handphones or PDA. I'm not saying i prefer noisy environment in the train, it just felt so, quiet.

This is a must try! You can find this at any food court or hawker centre. It's something that's not in Malaysia, so that could be another reason why i liked this food on the first official night of our stay.

After all was done, we headed back to the house. It was an exhausting day, and it was only the first, we had already complaint of aches on our legs. But, it was all worth it. The places we visited really opened our minds to futuristic possibilities and shopping, as i'd like.

= Onto World Cup. Why are my teams clashing against one another? First, Germany and Argentina. Germany won by 4, should be their lucky number, and will meet Spain in the semifinal. I'm hoping Germany will ride on their fantastic play and win the cup. On the other side, Brazil lost to Netherlands. Brazil was amazing, their passing were beautiful but mistakes caused them dearly. Anyway, Brazil still need to find the oomph that brought them glory back in 2002. Looking forward to the semifinals- Uruguay to kick out Netherlands, as revenge! *evil smile*

More of Shrek, soon...

Shrek 1 is amazing, Shrek 2 is fantastic, Shrek 3 is disappointing, but Shrek 4 is awesome. Shrek goes back to their true origin that captures the heart. This time, it's a twist, with Shrek playing the victim of his own act. Rumpelstiltskin becomes the villain, with his pet Fifi, tries to overrule the kingdom of Far Far Away. Fiona, with others, formed the ogre resistance. Shrek signed to an unscrupulous agreement and will face death if not being kissed by the love of his life before sunrise. The opposite to Fiona back in the other installments.

To be honest, this could be the best Shrek in the series and i enjoyed every second of the show.

On World Cup. Great, my 4 teams are through. Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Spain. Last night, Germany knocked out England. England deserved their second goal- it definitely crossed the line. But anyway, a 4-1 win, proving that Germany has counterattack tactics too! They deserved the spot in the Q- finals too. Argentina won Mexico and another great match awaits: Germany-Argentina. This route they have chosen is going to be challenging. Because, they could meet Spain if Spain beat Portugal and Paraguay/Japan in semi finals. Not much worries for Brazil yet if they continue to perform. Meeting Chile and Netherlands/Slovakia.

The Last Song rules!

" Life (he realized) was much like a song.
In the beginning, there is a mystery, in the end there is a confirmation,
but it's in the middle where all the emotions resides to make the whole thing worthwhile. " - The Last Song.

The Last Song, by Nicholas Sparks, is a true winner. It's actually his best and tops my favourite list amongst his other books. Seriously, The Wedding and A Walk To Remember, step aside, The Last Song becomes my personal favourite now and after completing this magnificent piece, it further proves that Nicholas Sparks is my all time favourite writer, and his writings have much influenced mine as well!

Why i like it? Simple, it's a fine combination of both my other favourites from him. Somehow, reading, it, i can feel the convergence between The Wedding and A Walk To Remember. We have Wilson Lewis in The Wedding, Steve in The Last Song. Landon Carter in A Walk To Remember, Will in The Last Song. And both these characters have been a pleasure to read. Fine characterisation.

And then we have an amazing storyline. Reading most of his books, i didn't really feel the twist in this; i'd anticipated that. In one way or another, NS kills the character, one of them. Then we have fire, rebellion, sister-brother love, father-daughter love, couple love, summer romances, piano, turtles, volleyball, fishing, church window, jealousy, friendship, trust, resentment, acceptance, forgiveness, joy and death. The ending of the story is absolutely tear-jerking.

He succeeds in all level. Jonah and Ronnie show beautiful brother-sister love. Ronnie-Blaze/Galadriel, Will-Scott, Steve-Pastor Harris all show the strength of their friendship and the turbulence they'd have to face. Ronnie-Will, similar to Landon and Jamie, show the powerful crafting of love blossoming between the two. From how they'd first met in the volleyball match, how she'd disliked him at first, slowly falling in love with one another, fishing dates, aquarium dates, and how the ending of the summer drifted them apart. However, it is Steve-Ronnie relationship that prevails the most. Steve, like Wilson, felt he'd left his family, and for after three years they'd never talked to each other.

It was this summer that he'd requested his ex-wife to invite both Ronnie and Jonah to accompany him during the break. And everything happened (i'm not telling much, just the necessary stuffs you may need to know). Ronnie was rebellious, disliking her presence in the little place from her New York home, disliking the people, but most importantly disliking his dad. She was angry at her dad for leaving her mother.

It's a true rollercoaster of emotion as well. As you read, you'll feel the change in character of Ronnie, how she'd then open her heart back to her dad (something happened, that's for you to investigate). And it was clearly her dad's love towards her.

This is the best title one could think of for this story. The Last Song. Why? Steve is a music teacher, then pursued his dreams to become a concert piano player. When Ronnie was a child, he taught her piano and when he'd left them, Ronnie hated the piano. She'd hated it a lot, while Steve loved it. And during the summer they'd spent together, for the love of her daughter, he'd built a wall to separate himself from the piano. Sacrifices of a father.

If you reach three quarter of the book, you'll understand what it means by The Last Song. And reading a book about piano heightened my love for it as well. During this holidays, i'm definitely dedicating myself to discovering more on the piano.

I'll stop here for the book review. In short, 5 stars! Awesome! Go-and-read and you'll-be-satisfied. This book is REALLY REALLY fantastic. Love and death.

Onto football, one by one, the big names are falling. Spain, France, Germany and Italy struggles. Brazil was amazing and i'd love to see them maintain their fighting spirit. Group stage coming to an end with all the third matches coming soon.

The Last Song is wc10 favourite book from now on.

Nine Emperor Gods Temple, Queensbay Mall, FIFA...

When it comes to holiday, to me, it means going out and exploring the world. While i'm still not able to fund my own vacation completely, going out with my family is the best and the on every level, i enjoy it. Like it. Love it.

This time, it was a short visit to Penang. Without a doubt, Sungai Petani has great food! But Penang, it just simply has so much to offer. And, food aside, i just realized that Penang has so many interesting spots that stand out to attract tourist; tourists like us. Definitely, Penang is worth the UNESCO title.

On our way to Penang island, we stopped by to visit the Nine Emperor Gods temple and it was beautiful. Intricate carvings on the pillars, walls and ceilings. A tour around the temple simply is fascinating.

If anyone wishes to visit Penang, this temple is on the mainland, somewhere near Butterworth, and absolutely a must-visit recommendation from me.

The next place we visited was the Queensbay Mall. It was, rather, a disappointment. We were there on Sunday and the traffic into the parking lot and the parking lot itself were terrible. The parking lots, outdoor, had no proper parking guidelines and the cars were parked as if those people had no brains. Seriously, it was like as if we had to squeeze through the cars and worst still, there was no parking in the first place we tried (the attendants still allowed people in) and we were forced to exit only to enter another empty, newly opened parking lots. And... I still don't get why the people didn't want to enter the newly open lots, plenty of spaces, but queued in line to enter the covered ones. I mean, the queue to enter was looong. Different thinking, i reasoned.



Anyhow, what made this visit interesting was the ways, i noticed, how soy bean could be consumed. I had tried one out of the three unique ways of soy bean and to be honest, the other two were tasty.

First, soy bean drink with 'yoo tiau'. Interesting combination. Will be trying this soon in KL.

Second, ice cream soy bean. As we descended the escalator, we say people making a beeline to this shop. Intrigued, we tried one. Not much to my liking though, it tastes... weird.

Third, and probably the more common, was the Michael Jackson drink. A combination of the soy bean drink with the 'cincau'.

Yes, if you're wondering, i took soy bean three times in one day. I might have an overdose of it already.

The trip ended with a satisfying dinner at Gurney Drive.

Onto World Cup. Spain suffered a devastating 1-0 loss to Switzerland. What a waste, i want Spain to advance to the next stage but looking at it now, it'll be a challenge. Brazil scored 2, Italy drew at one, Holland won 2-0. Argentina facing South Korea, France facing Mexico. It'll be interesting to see these teams continue to battle it out in the second round of Group Stage if they want to progress to the next stage. Germany remains my favourite for now.

Eyes on South Africa, FIFA 2010 !

The time is now, the time the world has been waiting for. The time the world sleeps no more for the next month, the time our productivity level will reduce and eye bags surface. The time the world watches and cheers for their team, the time when the winning team lifts the cup. The time of a lifetime, once every four years, the FIFA 2010 World Cup! And this time, South Africa takes the stage!

But you've got it all, believe it... "

There is something about FIFA that distinguishes itself from the other leagues like EPL, Champions, Euro, etc. Perhaps, it's because it's wonderful to see the world play as one and the true beauty of football can be seen and felt. Football does break down barriers; political views aside, when it comes to the ball, we follow the rules. It may not be all about winning, as to me, winning the cup alone can mean so much more. It means togetherness, it means unity. No team can win without this key quality and even though you field all star players, and if they are selfish, that won't be much a beautiful game and IF they'd won, they won't earn much of my respect.

It's about culture and arts too. It's amazing to witness South Africa hosting this much anticipated, most popular sport in the world. It shares to the world its culture, obviously shown during the kick-off concert, and their capability to hold an event on a giant scale. Since it's in S Africa too, we get to read more, and learn more, about the country and its people. 1Goal, Education for All.

I won't call myself a football fanatic but the World Cup never fails to struck my heart, my long lost flame for football. As i watched these matches, often i wonder what happened to my passion for playing football. During FIFA 2002 in Korea-Japan, i was deeply interested in football and from then on became so involved in it, but as i aged older, i felt myself losing the touch. Football, i've realized, will not be my career. But still, watching football thrills and brings extreme fun!

Still in Group Stage. Germany impresses me the most hitherto. Thrashing 4-0. Argentina failed to shine; England and France failed to deliver. It's still too early to predict since teams like Brazil, Italy, Spain etc have yet to show their skills. Nevertheless, my money is on Germany to the next round, and probably to the finals if they continue their fantastic play!

Season 4, Episode 10: Finishing the freshman year...

Alright, i made it this season to ten episodes. Looking back, i had to admit that this season had been rather busy and it made it felt as if this semester could be wrapped up all nicely into a week. I could remember entering the semester like it was yesterday.

Enough say about time and how fast this semester had been. Exams are over, and for one thing i can tell you for sure is that the holidays are my favourite time. Holidays are the only time when i can do what i like such as visiting the movies more often that i could (with Prince of Persia, Shrek kicking off the list), hang out with my friends, go for exercises (blame it on the tight schedule on the normal days), holidaying in Kedah and Singapore, and eat, eat and just simply eat.

And what more, i have the time to read (I'm on 'The Last Song' now and i can sense that it is real deal) and write. I'm currently on my next big project with the tentative title 'One Shot'. I can feel the challenges in this writing as the characters will require a little more effort to portray. Nevertheless, it's something i like to do and i wish you to read it when i am done with it. My target, my first draft is to complete by mid July. So, hang on tight!

And... FIFA 2010 in South Africa! Hopefully, the FIFA this time will revive my inner desire for football. The passion had dimmed over the years and to be honest, after the FIFA 2002 (my peak passion for it), i sort of lose touch. Bring it on!

Everywhere's getting ready for the World Cup... excitement! I will do a post on it alone when it kicks off this 2nd June.

Season 4, Episode 9: Expectation, Exams.

" What happens to those who have no choices left? " - Desperate Housewives Season 6 finale.

The exam fever strikes again. It's now two down; three to go.

And i don't get why am i even blogging about them now. I don't want to ever relive the moments sitting for the papers- it wasn't very much a pleasant experience, on the chair squeezing your brain and rubbing your forehead. What i want to say out loud now is that, Vector Calculus and Structured Programming is over for me.

You know, it's always the same thing you say or hear when you exit the exam hall- pass year's papers were easier/simpler/more direct. The fact is, it is, for me. Perhaps it was the pressure holding the pen and answering the questions that made it felt so. Either way, the papers were a challenge this time around. Hopefully whatever i have answered do earn marks and scores!

Expectations? I usually set two bars for myself- one lower than the other making the region formed between the both satisfactory. The higher bar is always set as my ultimate target, one that requires more than effort to achieve. And the other, is set to where i want to be that will provide me with enough self-satisfaction and joy.

Exam isn't everything, right? I have just watched the season finale of Desperate Housewives season 6 and i can tell you, it is worth the watch. An explosive finish to an intriguing build-up of the plot. Even the characters (or the producers that made them so) became so smart. To sum it all up, this is the best ever episode of Desperate Housewives. I wonder what neighbourhood mystery will mystify the residents of Wisteria Lane next.

Interval to my next paper, 5 days. Probably, i should take one day out to heal myself of the wounds from the earlier battles and start preparing for the next when i'm done. wc10 continues to fight and remember, ...

Season 4, Episode 8: Successor...

" I am not here to show whether the Chinese or Western martial art is better even though there is a status difference. Integrity does not worth more than another, we just have to start respecting each other. " - Ip Man in Ip Man 2.

It's the study week already. My exams will begin next week. Am i ready? To tell you the truth, i'm not sure. Time flies really fast this semester and soon i realised, it's the exams, and even sooner, the exams will be over.

A recap of the final week of lectures. As for this semester, the tests were not bundled in one go on the final week as most of the them were conducted earlier. In a way, it's a relief because i can pay more attention to the exams. Hoping the best in return for the papers that i took.

You may wonder why this episode is entitled 'successor'. What does Iron Man and Ip Man movie franchises have in common? Yes, a sequel. But this post isn't going to be entirely a movie review, instead, i would like to bring another matter onto the table. And that, too, relates to being a successor.

The English Language Club in my uni held an election for the new board and i contended for the president seat. After the votes have been cast, i was elected the President of the club for the next term, 2010/2011. To be honest, i'm rather afraid taking over the role having seen that the previous president had done an excellent job and sometimes, i wonder, if i will be able to rise to the occasion and deliver as i have promised. One thing for sure i have is the passion to do better for the club.

On the second day release of Iron Man 2, a group of us headed to Jusco, Ipoh to watch the much-anticipated sequel. There is nothing much to cheer about except for it's advanced display of technology and a blast ending. The expo looks amazing, that's for sure. Frankly, the development of the story was verging on boredom and it didn't make much sense to me. Robert D J is a talented actor but i don't seem to be able to relate to him and his character. That alone is another reason i felt this movie was okey. Perhaps i'm not a fan of Iron Man. Thankfully for the ending, it came to save the day and made my money worth spent. Whether or not if it is better than the first, i leave that to you.


Go and watch Ip Man 2. That's the first thing i would say if you ask me about this movie. It is definitely a winner! Donnie Yen has that look that i couldn't put into words. His expression on his face while kung-fu-ing is extremely cool. The action scenes are amazing and with the effects into play, like slowing down movements, left me wow-ing to the end. It started off without much time to waste with its first fight scene. And continued on to one man versus more than 20, table top fighting, and eventually led to a dual between Western boxing and Chinese Kung Fu.

This is not an entirely action movie but rather a drama as well. It has much valuable lessons to learn. Ip Man is now my movie role model. He fights only when there is a need, passionate about teaching his Wing Chun the right way and above all, a family man. It's like the Chinese version of Cinderella Man. He cares for his family dearly. It was heartfelt touching when he said as quoted above, that i felt at one point if i am to repeat what i had with 2012. Rating a nine out of ten. (I never give any movie a ten.)

Well done to the people that made Ip Man. Wondering if there will be a sequel. If you are wondering what movie to watch coming this weekend, between the two, i recommend you to watch Ip Man 2.

Time to continue to hit the books. Finals... wc10 studies...

Season 4, Episode 7: EDX-O in C&P...

Had been caught in the stress-web lately due to the closing of this semester in two weeks time. By the time i'm writing this post, i have only one week of lecture remaining and after that, it's the study week, a pre-honeymoon, as I quote from my Vector Calculus lecturer. I usually call this time the 'second' wave. Whenever i wish to plan for an event, never choose either of these periods: a week before mid-sem break and a week before the study break. I just had three tests and one more coming up real soon. And not to forget, assignments and quizzes!

The tests were really difficult. No joke! It just is so disappointing to know that you have studied so hard for the test and when the paper comes, the questions blind you and your mind. Hopefully what i have done will equal the input i have given in for the tests and pray for the best in return.

Putting all those aside, the final event of this semester is over! Engineering Design Exhibition 25, in short, EDX 25. I have been wanting to be part of this event and i could not have chosen a better time to join. This edition of EDX, we had Tun Dr Mahathir. That alone is one of the reason why i became an EDX Officer.

He was invited to give a public lecture entitled 'Beyond Vision 2020'. It was an interesting topic, as if he has a portal to see the future of the might-be. I was busy on that day so i couldn't listen much about it. Becoming the human barrier for Tun later, i took the best spot. I stood right in front of him and the photo above is taken by me. What an experience!

Another close encounter of him. While we were waiting outside our pathway to the Green Room, we chatted amongst our committees as the doors were closed and guarded by the security. All of a sudden, the doors flung open and Tun stepped out with the VVIPs. We immediately hurried to make a way for him to walk through and as i nodded to him, he nodded back! Wow, what an experience! It happened too fast for me to even take out my camera.

I was recruited in the Ceremony and Protocol Department, dealing mostly with opening and closing ceremonies. It was not difficult, just time-consuming as we had to rehearse over and over again to make sure things run smoothly. Nevertheless, i had a bunch of fun people to work with.

Celebrating our success after the opening ceremony was conducted successfully. The banners do make beautiful backdrop. The theme was 'space' and the shinny, hemisphere-shaped object bearing the name of this event is a UFO spaceship. It took us tremendous amount of time to finalize and beautify that thing!

As for the closing gimmick, i was appointed to play the role of an astronaut. Do i look like one here? Astronaut? I thought someday i might be one. Standing beside me is Rani, another committee of my department.

Done with EDX, done with all the events this semester. Exhausting but surely rewarding, this is another exciting ride. However, i'm still tied to other commitments.

And yes, because of this EDX, i managed to watch Clash of the Titans. It wasn't as bad as people have said about it. In fact, in my opinion, it's amazing. Comparing to the other recent Greek god movie, Percy Jackson, which to me is amateurish and no mind-blowing sound effects, Titans has intensity and superb acting. Those who have watched the original will tend to favour Titans too, although it is rather similar to the original, it has with brilliant CGI effects. A good choice of movie to watch.

Time to put my mind on books and focus on my ultimate goal. Final exams are in two weeks time. wc10 reads and writes?

Season 4, Episode 6: Flamin Lips meets The Chronicler!

The final major event i am involved in the organization is The Chronicler: Pen-a-LOL. This time, i was the Project Director and truly, this event has thought me a lot about organizing and also about dealing with stress!

It is not easy handling an event. As long as it is an event, whether or not if it's big or small, you will have complications. Sometimes things don't go the way you have wanted it to be. But i realized that these challenges are tests, and through these tests i can gauge my capability and work on my weakness.

This is a creative writing competition event and on the Award Night, there was the prize giving ceremony to the winners of all categories. It is a dinner-cum-event night and truly, it has been an amazing time for all. The theme of the night is Humour, and as we have expected it to be, it was a fun-filled night with lots and lots of laughter!

Putting behind all the complications earlier before the day, i enjoyed the night tremendously! Having a piece of a cake here in appreciation of the hard work.

Everyone lives in their own little world

And I’d like to welcome you into mine

The world that I grew fond of

And that I would never leave

I see the grass in shades of green

I see the sea in shades of blue

I see the Sun smiling

The moon winking

And the clouds shaping

I tried to fly and defy gravity

But I stumbled upon every attempt

A bird beside me whispered

‘This is how you do it’

And it spread its wings and flew

I learned how to swim

From a fish

He told me it was simple

He will never drown

I’m through accepting limits

They are nothing but a wall

That separates me from who I am

And who I want to be

In my world

The only limit is myself

And if I don’t tear it down

I will never be able to live

The way I have vowed myself to live

The world is a funny place

And if you see it just like I do

Smile at it

And the world smiles with you
